COMMON TYPES AND PARTS OF A DIESEL TRUCK CLUTCH

We can handle maintenance, repairs and replacements for all your clutch parts and components. The clutch, which is a mechanical device found in manual vehicles, allows the driver to transfer power from the engine to the wheels and shift gears. There are various types of clutches found in diesel trucks, including:

  • Stock replacement
  • Single disc
  • Dual disc
  • Triple disc

Our Clutch Replacement Process

STAGE 1
Tooling and kit contents checklist
The generic tools you will need to operate a successful fitting operation safely are:
1. Lever arm
2. Torque wrench
3. Release wrench for cover assembly
4. Driven plate centering tool
5. Fitting pins
6. Crankshaft rotator
7. Clamp for release bearing
8. Flat wrench for pilot bearing release tool
9. Pilot bearing disengagement tool

Our replacement clutch kit is composed of three components: pressure plate cover assembly, driven plate and mechanical release bearing and always includes a fitting instruction.

STAGE 2
Dismounting defective clutch
Before moving the gearbox out, you will have to perform some operations to disengage the release bearing and the fork from the clutch. Open the gearbox housing trap door. Please note, depending on the vehicle brand, opening of gearbox may vary.

First use the crankshaft rotator from the vehicle manufacturer to rotate the flywheel. This operation will make the hooking ring on the pressure plate cover assembly easily accessible. Disengage the release bearing and fork to enable gearbox box detachment from the engine. Enter the clamp through the gearbox trap and clip it to the hooking ring. Snap-off the release bearing with the lever arm. You can now unscrew the gearbox screws and move out the gearbox to access the clutch parts.

Fix the centering tool, which prevents the driven plate from falling down. Unscrew the pressure plate cover assembly. First unscrew two screws of the pressure plate cover assembly and install two fitting pins. Then unscrew the pressure plate cover assembly according to the correct order. Disassemble the driven plate. Remove the centering tool. Use a disengagement tool to take out the pilot bearing. For safety of driving We recommends changing the pilot bearing each time you change your clutch kit.

Check that there is no grease around the flywheel. Clean the flywheel using solvent or brake cleaner and sandpaper grit size 150.

STAGE 3
Fitting pressure plate cover assembly and driven plate
Install the new pilot bearing first. Once again, fix the centering tool to prevent the driven plate from falling. Before fitting the driven plate, make sure that its splines do not seize and fit to the gearbox axis.

Make sure you DO NOT put grease on the driven plate; it may alter the friction coefficient! Install the driven plate and the pressure plate cover assembly. Firstly screw lightly the pressure plate cover assembly. Remove the two fitting pins and the two screws. You may check the tightening torque according to manufacturer recommendations.

We strongly recommends NOT USING an impact driver. It may damage the thread! Tighten the screws of the pressure plate cover assembly in correct order by using your torque wrench. When finished, remove the four shipping clips from the pressure plate cover assembly. Finally, remove the centering tool.

STAGE 4
Bearing replacement
Check the tube guide and primary shaft. Before replacing your release bearing, you have to disassemble the fork, which may need to be changed depending on the vehicle mileage or fork’s seizing. Now you can access the release bearing and remove it safely. Remove the old release bearing. Check that there is no grease leak on tube guide and clean the tube guide with solvent and sand paper if necessary. If the fork axle is seized up, add some grease to the fork seating axle.

Fit the new release bearing and tighten the fork with torque wrench. Check that the fork axle is moving smoothly and its condition is good. Change the fork if needed.

STAGE 5
Fitting of the gearbox housing
Close the gearbox housing and tighten its screws. Snap-on the release bearing (accessible through the slave cylinder in some applications). Push twice to ensure good snapping. Check carefully that hooking ring needles are correctly centered at equal distance with center part of the ring. They should not touch upwards or downwards. Ensure to close the gearbox trap using gum watertight cap to prevent the gearbox housing from dust contamination.

STAGE 6
re-installation & road test
re-installation of gearbox with diagnostic tool: After fitment of the clutch for a vehicle with robotised Transmission, it is mandatory to reset the system with the right re-installation diagnostic tool. After re-installation, you should road test the vehicle

Regardless of the type of clutch, you will typically find these main parts in clutches:

  • Flywheel: The flywheel is found mounted on the crankshaft and has either a friction surface or friction disc.
  • Cover plate: The cover plate is attached to the flywheel.
  • Pressure plate: The pressure plate is found on the splined hub. When it is engaged, it will clamp the disc assembly onto the flywheel to transfer the engine power to the transmission. When it is disengaged, there will be a gap for the disc to disengage from the flywheel, and the driver will be able to shift gears.
  • Driven plate: Found between the flywheel and the pressure plate, the driven plate runs on a splined shaft.
  • Release bearing: The release bearing is operated by a fork and has a friction material on each side.

You may also find friction discs and a spring level in your truck’s clutch.

Our professionally trained technicians perform complete clutch system troubleshooting and other maintenance services using only the latest clutch diagnostics and specialized tools.

We offer expertise and experience you won’t find anywhere else, giving you the confidence you need to tackle each mile.

Step 1: Remove Transmission

The mechanic has to remove the transmission to gain access to the clutch assembly on a semi-truck. The truck is raised in the air on a truck lift. A hydraulic jack is placed under the transmission to support the weight of the transmission while the mechanic unbolts it from the clutch assembly. The transmission will stay on the jack when the mechanic moves it to the side so he can work on the clutch.

Step 2: Remove Clutch Assembly

The clutch assembly is removed in the following order:

  1. Clutch brake
  2. Clutch
  3. Non-Captive Disc
  4. Release bearing and Captive Disc
  5. Flywheel

Installing New Transmission

Here is how a mechanic will put the transmission back together.

Main Flywheel: The main flywheel is typically resurfaced and checked for deformities. The flywheel is placed back onto the truck and bolted to the crank flange. Blue thread lock is placed onto the bolts to protect the bolts against rust and corrosion. The thread lock also prevents the truck's vibrations from loosening the bolts.

The bolts are tightened using a torque wrench to manufacturer's specifications.

Two threaded studs are placed at the top of the flywheel into the holes where the clutch will bolted later in the process.

Release Bearing & Captive Disc

The mechanic will place an alignment tool through the center hole in the release bearing and captive disc (the release bearing is built into the captive disc).

A non-captive disc is placed over the alignment tool with the flywheel side of it facing away from the captive disc. The assembly is then slid over the two threaded studs on the main flywheel to hold it in place as the mechanic installs the mounting bolts through the clutch assembly and into the main flywheel - blue thread lock is used on these bolts, too.

The two threaded studs are removed after all the other mounting bolts have been installed. Mounting bolts are then placed where the threaded studs were located. These bolts are also tightened according to manufacturer's recommendations with a torque wrench.

The alignment tool is removed once all the parts have been securely bolted in place.

Install Transmission

New brake pads are placed over the input shaft on the transmission and clipped into place. The transmission is then raised and the input shaft is slid into the clutch assembly. The mechanic then bolts the transmission housing to the clutch housing.

After the mechanic has reinstalled the transmission onto the clutch, he can then proceed to adjust the clutch so everything works well to get your truck back on the road.
